Sony launches SmartWatch 2
Sony has launched SmartWatch 2, which it says enhances phone functionality for Android devices.
The SmartWatch 2 can be used as an Android app interface, a notifier and a phone remote control, and is the world’s first water resistant smartwatch with near field communication (NFC) connectivity.
Sony today termed itself the market leader in wearable
technology, having released the first device to the market, beating the likes of Apple and Google.
“Sony is the proud leader in the smartwatch market since introducing our first Bluetooth watch in 2007,” said head of companion products at Sony Mobile Stefan Persson.
“Competitors are only now launching first generation devices, while we are already launching a third generation device with all the insight gained from over half a million customers combined with Sony’s wealth of technology expertise to create the best ever smartwatch experience.”
He added that the future is in the wearable device category, with 41 million smartwatches expected to be sold in the next four years.
The smartwatch has over 200 unique apps with over one million downloads, which Sony says will enhance compelling smartphone experiences.
It also has near field communication (NFC) connectivity for one touch pairing and higher resolution for sharper viewing and better visibility.
Meanwhile, Sony has released another version of the Sony Xperia Z Ultra, with a 6.4 inch display.
The device can take sketches and notes written using standard pencil or metal tipped pens, and is expected to offer competition to Samsung in the large-screened phones segment, with the latter accounting for more than 70 per cent of such devices.
Just like the Xperia Z launched earlier in the year, the phone is water, dust and shutter resistant.
