Gmail update lets you save attachments directly to Drive

Gmail users now can view attachments and save files directly to Google Drive without ever leaving their e-mail, Google announced in a blog post Tuesday.

Instead of downloading attachments, Gmail users can save files directly to Drive by clicking on the Drive button that appears when hovering over attachment previews at the bottom of an e-mail. Users even can move
the file to a specific Drive folder without ever leaving their e-mail. Of course, Gmail users still can download attachments to their computers by clicking the arrow button that appears when hovering over files.

Google said the feature works for all types of files, including images, videos, spreadsheets, and PDFs. The new attachment experience, which is available on desktop, will roll out to Gmail users over the next week. It only works within Gmail, Google said, so people using desktop e-mail apps or other clients to get to their Gmail won't be able to save attachments to Drive the same way.

In addition to quickly saving attachments to Drive, the Gmail update lets users browse full-screen views of attachments before downloading or saving them to Drive. Just click on the attachment preview at the bottom of an e-mail and a large version of the image or document pops up. Users then can search for a particular phrase in a document or browse through multiple attachments while still in Gmail.
